It still needs some work. The best way I have found to put companions in their own group is; Cavalry - Give each companion a horse/shield/lance or spear and 1 throwing weapon. Create a cavalry squad, then click on the plus sign bottom right. Select a preference for throwing weapons.

Pretty sure campaign options in the escape menu has a bix like the beginning. Ya it seems to only be an option in the beginning. Campaign Options in the current menu have nothing regarding companion deaths :/. I was pretty sure it was permanent but i’m not gonna load up the game to check so 🤷‍♂️.
