The Esterman Visual Field Test is the recommended specialised test used by the DVLNI to determine if the patient’s peripheral (side) vision is still suitable for driving. Sometimes certain medical conditions can affect peripheral vision in one or both eyes, so this needs to be tested to maintain road safety and remain compliant with your car
You must meet the standards of vision for driving and have an adequate field of vision to drive a car, lorry or bus. You must also tell DVLA if you have any problem with your eyesight that affects your driving. You will be asked to have an eyesight test at the start of your practical driving test and at your next DVSA standard eyesight test.
strongly advise you to have an eye test before booking an assessment. If you have had a visual field test and have been given a copy of the result, it would be helpful for us to see this. If you need glasses or contact lenses for reading and/or driving, it is essential that you bring them with you to the assessment.
In terms of the DVLA visual field test, the minimum requirements for driving are 120 degrees of uninterrupted horizontal visual field and 20 degrees of the uninterrupted vertical visual field. Can I take an eyesight test before applying for a provisional driving licence ?
