So the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 is a good all-purpose lens. Its f/2.8 constant aperature will allow you to take photos in vastly more situations because it wide opening allows in up to four times as much light as the lenses you mentioned. Gus, I am pretty sure that he is comparing this 55mm-250mm IS lens, with this 75mm-300mm NON IS lens. It was nearly a year ago and at the camera shop I went to, they were saying that the lens quality of the 55-250mm lens would be better than the 75-300mm, but much of the additional cost with the 55-250mm lens has to do with it being an image stabilization lens while the other one is not.
